Prepare time codes in Final Cut pro 7

Exporting a small movie file from final cut pro 5-7

#0 Watch the video tutorial above to see how to prepare timecoded video from your already exported movie. Then follow instruction #5.

#1
If working from editing sequence, select your movie sequence in Final Cut Pro Browser window and duplicate it (Right-click > Duplicate). This will ensure your original sequence is preserved.

#2 Go to the first frame of your movie in duplicated sequence and see the timecode, which is in the upper left corner of your timeline window. This timecode needs to be either 01:00:00:00 or 01:00:00;00, depending if it's non-drop frame (NDF) or drop frame (DF) movie. Ask your editor or search on internet for more information about NDF vs DF.

#3 If you have colour bars, film leader or just sound beep before the movie, and the first frame of your movie is not 01:00:00:00 or 01:00:00;00, then go to Modify > Timecode and offset your timecode by the amount it requires so the beginning of your video is at 01:00:00:00. First two digits represent hour (or reel, depending), then minutes, seconds and finally frame count.  If the first frame of your movie starts at 01:00:30:02 for example, and your frame rate is 23.976 fps, you need to offset the timecode by 30 sec and 4 frames, making the timecode at the beginning of the sequence 00:59:29:23, since 23.976 fps is counted in non-drop frame mode as 24. This will make your sequence start at 01:00:00:00.

#4 Select the sequence in Final Cut Pro Browser window.
If you have Compressor app, in File menu click Send > to Compressor. Then follow the instructions above concerning the creation of small file in Compressor.

#5 If you don't have Compressor app,
in File menu click Export > Using QuickTime Conversion. Then in Options set Frame Rate to Current (Important!), restrict Data Rate to 700 kbits/sec , and Encoding: Faster Encode (Single-Pass). In Size select Custom dimensions of 480 x270. Set sound to AAC, 320 kbps. Click OK.

#6 Save your movie
.
